About Our Deer Hunting

1. Where is San Angelo, Texas?  We are about 100 miles due west of the center of the state.  Yes, we do have an airport served by AA and Continental.  We are a town of about 100,000.

    

2.  What’s the weather like?    Our most frequently asked question.  Watch the weather channel the day before you leave to hunt with us.  We are usually chilly (30-40 degrees) at night and warm to shirt-sleeve weather during the day.  Unless a front is coming through.  It can get cold.

    

3. What’s the terrain like?   Mesquite savanna broken by low, stony cedar-covered hills with scattered stands of live oak trees and pecans along the river bottoms.  Almost every plant that grows here has a thorn of some kind. Elevation changes 200-300 feet over a couple of miles. 

    

4. Is orange required?   No.

    

5. What is your “Trophy Option” offer all about?  It means simply what it says.  It’s the next best thing to a guaranteed hunt.  For a bargain price, you can come give us a try (Home Camp only).

    

6. How does your guiding work?  In the morning, you’ll be one/on/one with your guide for walking, stalking and rattling.  The other hunter will hunt from a blind.  In the afternoon, you switch places.

    

7. What gun is best?   The one with which you are the most accurate and have the most confidence.  Shot placement beats caliber any day.  Shots average 100 yards.  Our guide’s favorite calibers are these: .270, .308, 30.06.  We’ve seen lots of misses and wounded deer with super-large guns.

    

8. Do you take bow hunters?  Only at the Home Camp.  We’ll have only a couple each year.  The  McManus camp has no bow stands. 

    

9. How far are the shots?  Most shots will be about 100 yards.  Extremes each year are 300-500 yard shots (across a wheat field), and 10 yard shots on rattling hunts.

    

10. What about the meat?  No hunting camp does a better job than we do.  Bring a 54 quart cooler to take your meat home on the plane.  Anything larger and you’ll be charged extra when it gets over 70 lbs.  We have a few coolers for sale if you don’t have one.

     

11. What about my deer head?  We can help arrange taxidermy here in San Angelo.   Or we will provide you with a box for the frozen and bagged head to check like regular luggage.  You can protect the antlers with your hunting clothes, etc.

     

12. What about alcohol?  We have a refrigerator in camp for your beer and wine; we’ll have ice, cokes, and 7 ups for mixed drinks.  Anything more exotic, you will need to bring.  We have plenty of soft drinks in camp, plus candy and snacks.  We’ll stop at a liquor store on the way to camp.

     

13. Do you have a rifle range?   Yes, and every hunter is required to shoot a few rounds to check his/her gun before the hunt starts.  Bring sufficient bullets.

     

14. Any special suggestions?  Leather boots are best in this rocky, dry (normally) country.  Those LaCrosse-type rubber boots make too much noise when you are walking in rocks.

     

15. Can I bring a non-hunting companion?  Yes, but only to our Home Camp.  We charge $125 per day or $500 for the four days for lodging and meals per non-hunter. 
    

     

16. What about flying and bringing my gun?  It’s done all the time and probably 50% of our hunters fly to hunt with us.  Even following 9-11, it’s not a big deal.  Many choose to fly to San Antonio, Dallas, or Midland to rent a car to drive here.  Just buy a good gun case, and don’t duct tape or lock any luggage until after the inspection at the airport.  

     

17. How do I book a hunt?  Just give us a call and we’ll look at our available open dates.  When you pick the one you want, the hunt is booked.  We’ll then send you our Booking Agreement that spells out the deposit requirement (usually about half the price of the hunt).  The balance on a deer hunt is due October 1 or on arrival.  The main thing is to call and to get the open dates.  And don’t hesitate to call late in the year.  Sometimes we have cancellations at the last minute.

     

18. What is that funny-looking  symbol in your logo?  That is the Duncan Ranch brand.  We call it the “Turkey Track L”.  It was registered in 1903 by great-grandparents Abijah  and Nancy Duncan.

20. Why does the Adobe Lodge get so much repeat business?   Hunters tell us that once is just not enough.  They have too much fun and see too many bucks.
